American Eskimo Dog is intelligent, alert, very curious and playful. They are fond of being fun and extroverted, very willing to meet and make friends with everyone. Sometimes they can be very stable. It takes some time for the American Eskimo dog to mature and maintains the look of a puppy dog for the first year or two of their life. They make very good friendships.
The American Eskimo Dog learns quickly and is eager to please their owner. Hard training methods are not suitable. American Eskimo dogs should be trained in the early stages of their life. Loyalty training is recommended.
The American Eskimo Dog must be regularly scrubbed to prevent matting, and more frequently in the period of shedding. Hair must not be shaved so as not to harm the skin during the shedding period. The American Eskimo Dog often cleans themselves, so they should only be washed 4-5 times a year. American Eskimo dogs often need to communicate with people. They feel good in cool weather, they become very uncomfortable in hot weather. They are prone to hip dysplasia and may have allergies to fleas. American Eskimo dogs live between 10 and 15 years on average (some can live up to 20 years) and bring 4-6 puppies to the world.
American Eskimo Dogs have social relations with family, children, other pets and domestic animals, and they get along well with them. They can bark to strangers, but they are not aggressive dogs.

American Eskimo Dog has two layered fur. The lining fur is short and dense and the outer fur long and flat The fur similar to the mane in the chest and neck region is thicker and longer.. The American Eskimo Dog must be in white or biscuit cream. Otherwise a different color is unacceptable. The American Eskimo Dog sheds twice a year.
The standard American Eskimo dog needs to exercise enough every day and must be taken for long runs or walkings. In order to prevent overheating of heavy fur, plenty of water should be given during exercise and they should be kept in a shady place. American Eskimo Dog likes dog sports. They can be bored and destructive when they can not communicate.
Apartment life is suitable for them. They become very active in the house. But a small garden is always better.
The American Eskimo Dog (referred to in some regions as 'Olde' or the German name 'spitz') actually comes from the roots of several German genders, such as the Pomeranian and Keeshond. There is no close relationship with the Alaskan wolves. The American Eskimo Dog was brought to America by German residents in the early 20th century and became a famous circus actress. An Eskie, called 'Stout's Pal Pierre', got famous for walking on tight rope. After the demonstration, the Eskie pups were sold and this breed was made famous by the circus. The American Eskimo Dog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1994.
